The sunny Costa Blanca comes to the Sunderland Empire for one week only with Benidorm Live!
Derren Litten’s smash hit ITV comedy Benidorm, is set to bring sunshine and smiles to the Sunderland Empire stage with the star-studded cast from the Solana Hotel including Jake Canuso (Mateo), Janine Duvitski (Jacqueline), Sherrie Hewson (Joyce Temple-Savage), Shelley Longworth (Sam), Tony Maudsley (Kenneth) and Neptune’s very own Asa Elliott. Derren has now written an all-new set of Alicante escapades for the much-loved cast members as they swap sangria for the stage – after a quick spruce up at the Blow ‘n’ Go!
Benidorm the TV show has been one of my guilty pleasures since I was a teenager, I’n not ashamed to admit that I have every single series on DVD! I can’t believe it first aired on our screens way back in 2007 and is still as popular as ever. Critically acclaimed, Benidorm has received two National Television Awards, a TV Quick Award and nominations at the British Comedy Awards and BAFTAs. I was thrilled to be invited down the Sunderland Empire on Monday to preview the show and it didn’t disappoint.
I wasn’t too sure what to expect from the live show. I kept wondering whether it would be turned into a musical and doubted whether it would be any good in all honesty, but I was wrong. Benidorm Live was like sitting at home on a Friday night, with the characters right in front of you not in the TV! It was just like watching another episode, comedy gold!
The set, designed by designer Mark Walters has successfully transformed the iconic sets and costumes from the TV series to stage adaptations. It really was like being at the Solana! Each scene seamlessly transformed from the reception as we see it on the TV to the pool area to even Neptunes Bar! Very authentic.
I won’t spoil the storyline too much for anyone interested in going to see it but as a quick outline, the Solana team are on a quest to save their jobs as the hotel is going to new owners. Along the way, they’re faced with tricky holidaymakers and sticky situations!
I don’t think I stopped laughing throughout the whole performance, from Kenneth’s legendary tongue and cheek t-shirts and hot pants to Mateo’s sexual innuendoes. Absolutely fantastic.
Benidorm Live is in Sunderland 14-19 January 2019. Tickets available in person at the Box Office on High Street West, from the Ticket Centre on 0844 871 3022 or online at www.ATGtickets.com/Sunderland.
