The Importance Of Sleep | Leesa Mattress Review

Ask yourself this, what does sleep mean to you? To me, sleep means relaxation, it means chill time and it means to rest. I lead a very busy, hectic and active lifestyle. I try to get the most out my days, squeezing in as much as I possibly can. My usual, weekday looks a little like this:

6:00 am – Wake up and go to the gym.
6:45 am – 45 minutes exercise.
7:30 am – Get ready for work.
9:00 am – Work.
12:30pm – Lunch.
17:00 pm – Finish Work.
17:30 pm – Either back to the gym or home, depending on how tired I am!
19:00 pm – Home, shower, eat.
22:30pm – Sleep.

That means I get on average, seven and half hours sleep. God knows how I survive on 7 hours sleep doing all that I do. It got me thinking, how much sleep do we actually need and what’s the ‘recommended’ hours of sleep we need to get since according to The National Sleep Foundation we spend up to one-third of our lives asleep.

Apparently nearly half of us Brits are getting just six hours sleep or less a night. And an alarming four out of five people complain of disturbed or inadequate – or ‘toxic’ – sleep, according to the Sleep Council ‘Toxic Sleep’ survey, back in January 2011. Whilst on my quest to understand how much sleep we really need, I discovered from The National Sleep Foundation have outlined a guide to how many hours we need to have a ‘good’ sleep based on ages.

Newborns (0-3 months):  14-17 hours
Infants (4-11 months):  12-15 hours
Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours
Preschoolers (3-5): 10-13 hours
School-age children (6-13):  9-11 hours
Teenagers (14-17):  8-10 hours
Younger adults (18-25):  7-9 hours
Adults (26-64): 7-9 hours
Older adults (65+): s 7-8 hours

So I’m probably spot on with my sleeping pattern! It fascinates me that the older we get the less sleep we actually need. Factors like how active we are, weight, health issues and how much caffeine we consume during the day also play a huge factor in how much sleep we need and ultimately have. The Sleep Council’s Great British Bedtime Report 2017 came back with some interesting results like:
The top three things that disturb our sleep are:
– worry or stress (45%)
– partner disturbance (25%)
– noise (20%)

Furthermore, more than one in 10 (13%) blame an uncomfortable bed. I’ve been in need of a new mattress for a long time so when Leesa got in touch asking if I’d like to try one of their fancy mattress’ I couldn’t say no. If I don’t get my sleep I’m very grumpy, it affects my mood, my motivation, my positivity, my appetite and the list goes on. I’m just not a nice person to be around, to be honest. Because of how much I do during a normal day, it’s crucial when I do get my downtime it’s perfect. I need to be comfortable, I need to be warm and I need to have a clear mind.

Leesa offers people like you and me a hassle-free way to buy a mattress online, built to order and delivered within 5-7 business days. If you decide to buy a mattress from the brand and you’re not sleeping better on their mattress design within 100 nights, they will donate your mattress to a charitable organization and provide you with a full refund. I think that’s a great brand unique selling point from the view of a buyer. I think people may be a bit dubious of buying such an important household item online, not being able to sit on it or feel it so this seems like almost a ‘safety’ net for buyers.

The sleep experts at Leesa designed their product with one goal in mind: to help people get a better night’s sleep. What makes Leesa different is the top layer of Avena foam. It’s a responsive material that allows airflow through the mattress for a cooler nights sleep and provides enough bounce for freedom of movement. The unique combination of three foam layers moulds to the body of each individual, providing optimum support and comfort.

It’s fair to say I was incredibly excited to receive my new mattress and hopefully endure a better nights sleep! The mattress arrived after just five days, which I think is a really fast delivery time. It arrived in a relatively small box, which I was surprised at! The Leesa Mattress is actually compressed and rolled to fit in a box just 106cm tall for delivery, then once you start to unwrap it, it begins to expand to get bigger and bigger… it’s like magic and all very exciting.

First Impressions

I left the mattress for an hour or so before I added sheets, duvet, and pillows to the mix and my first impressions were good. The actual quality of the bed is great, it’s very thick, cosy and soft. I ordered a king size mattress and it fit my bedframe perfectly! Not too high or too low either. The first lay down was like floating on a cloud, literally. I couldn’t wait to fall asleep.

I hit the hay and found it really easy to get comfortable. I usually fall asleep laying on my side but often wake up due to a dead arm or side however with the Leesa mattress I didn’t. I didn’t wake up once actually, during my first night’s sleep on the mattress or get a dead arm. Since the mattress contours and moulds, your body shape whatever position you’re in the bed will move with you. It didn’t take me long to knock the Zzz’s and I slept really soundly.

I woke up the next morning feeling thoroughly refreshed and ready to go. I occasionally wake up every now and again with a bad back, due to pressure through exercise and the Leesa mattress has really helped it.

So the first night was a success! I’ve had the mattress for around a ten days now and I’m yet to have a bad night sleep. Genuinely, its the best mattress I’ve ever slept on and I’m having the most amazing nights sleep I’ve had in a long time. Having the Leesa mattress has not only impacted positively on my sleeping habits but my health too. I’m waking up fresh, happier and ready to start the day!

I know it’s only early days but I’m really impressed with the Leesa Mattress and company as a brand so far. The mattress is a) wonderful and b) I just love what the company stands for and it’s values. The price of a king size mattress is a modest £690, not bad at all in comparison to competitors and other brands and extremely good value for money.

I’ll be writing a follow-up post in the new year, a couple of months on to see how my experience with the Leesa mattress is going! Stay tuned.

Oh my gosh! Before I go into too much, I LOVE HOW IT COMES IN A BOX!! The HASSLE of getting my current mattress up the stairs was so mental, because it just arrived “as is”!
So yeah, I’m so guilty of just thinking “Oh, that one’s soft! I like soft!”, and just buying a mattress that way. It’s so important to consider other factors, because yeah, we literally sleep in it for sometimes as long as we are out of it!!
Really good to know about this brand!

I have troubles sleeping, especially since I moved into a noiser neighborhood in London. Your blog post definitely emphasised that I am nowhere near getting enough sleep. I know I can’t do anything about the noise but maybe I should invest in a new mattress to see if that makes a difference.

Me and my partner got a new mattress last year and it’s made such a difference! My work times (4am starts) mean I don’t get near the right amount of sleep and end up napping through the day which is such a pain!
