SmashBurger, intuEldon Square Newcastle | Foodie Review
So Sunday is cheat day for me! I try my very hardest to stay healthy during the week so that when the weekend comes around, I can go all out and quench those naughty cravings! My favourite sweets ever, that I will never get sick of eating are Harribo Strawbs… how amazing are those though?!
Last Sunday, cheat day came around and I was invited to go and try out the newest burger bar in town… SmashBurger! Situated in Greys Quarter, Eldon Square – a place I’ve been visiting very regularly recently since it’s the place to hang out and eat in Newcastle City Centre right now. SmashBurger was founded in Denver, Colorado in 2007 by Tom Ryan and Rick Schaden, named after the technique of smashing a ball of ground beef on a grill to ‘sear the juices’. Due to their huge success it has now meant that chain has spread throughout the USA and now opening up in the UK! Lucky for us!
SmashBruger is an American style fast-casual burger restaurant offering its customers a huge range of exciting patty creations, think of it as a classier McDonalds. The menu is burger focused but does offer a range of chicken burgers and sandwiches plus salads of which I was massively impressed by and even umm’d and arrr’d over getting one since they sounded so delicious!
Me and my boyfriend went down around 1ish and met the team, we arrived just at the right time as the place was heaving by the time we’d finished. We were brightly welcomed in by the manager whom said we could take a seat anywhere, explaining the flow of the restaurant and how the business was ran. When I mentioned earlier, a classier McDonalds… what I mean by that is that it’s a lot more luxurious and on another scale completely. The place is very hip and swanky, dark yet brightened up by the bold red leather booths and seats with wooden intior, modern yet sticking to its American diner style roots.
We sat in a booth, had a browse over the menu and then was told to head to the counter to order. The menu is amazing, so much choice. It literally look me about 20 minute to decide, especially since they offer a burger with avocado called the ‘Avocado Club’ which includes fresh avocado, Applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, ranch dressing and mayo on a multi-grain bun. My actual dream since I love avocado BUT I didn’t even up choosing it as another delicacy caught my attention and taste buds which was the ‘Spinach & Goat Cheese’ Burger for a side the Smashburger sweet potato fries. This burger included cucumber, spinach, goat cheese, tomato, onion and balsamic vinaigrette on multi-grain bun, it sounded so tasty! My boyfriend went for the double ‘BBQ, Bacon & Cheddar’ which had BBQ sauce, Applewood smoked bacon, cheddar and haystack onions on an egg bun complete with the SmashBurger fries. So two quite different versions of the bog stand burger ey?!
To wash down our food, my boyfriend went for Peroni which was ice cold in a stein and I got the chance to try their famous shakes! I went for the chocolate shake which was probably the best milk shake I’ve ever had. The chocolate oozes in the milk making the texture thick and creamy but not too thick so it went down a treat. I also tried out their posh drinks machine which had every fizzy drink flavour you could imagine!
Our food arrived within about 10 minutes, fast but gourmet taste and presentation to say the least. I was stunned at how they’d managed to make a burger look so… pretty. If any brands are reading these, you win us half over if something looks good and especially food. We tucked in sharply, if you were a passer-by and heard us tucking into those burgers all you could probably hear was orgasmic noises like mmm and ahhh as we demolished them.
My burger had a mixture of textures, crunchy, juicy, sloppy (in a good way) and firm. The patty itself melted into my mouth as the goat cheese which topped it was slowing sinking into the warm burger surface. The combination of the cucumber and tomato with the cheese worked so well making it extra succulent. My boyfriend’s burger was meat bonanza, the bacon was so crispy and crunchy yet the burger was juicy and drenched with beef juices and creamy melted cheese, not grease. We both had the SmashBurger speciality sides which was that our fries were marinated in Italian olive oil, rosemary and garlic… one word unreal.
Price wise, good value for money considering potion sizes and taste. The place is perfect for a bite to eat mid shopping! I’d highly recommend SmashBurger and urge everyone try if you have a one near you. I’ll definitely be back soon.
Thank you to the SmashBurger team for inviting me along!
